Project localization:
The site of community importance Natura 2000 ROSCI0018 Căldările Zăbalei together with the protected natural area 2810 Căldările Zăbalei – Zârna Mică – Răoaza is located near the south-western border of Vrancea County, in the southern part of Vrancea Mountains, next to the protected natural areas ROSCI0228 Şindriliţa and ROSCI0023 Mişina Waterfall (Cascada Mişina), along Zăbala river. The site Căldările Zăbalei is located on the administrative territory of Nereju commune.
The protected area also overlaps the territory with the highest seismic activity in Vrancea, with the majority of epicenters concentrated north of Zăbala.
The project will take place in Vrancea County, on the administrative territory of Nereju commune and neighboring communes (Vrâncioaia, Paltin, Nereju Mic), in a wild area, with a wide mixed forest and a large concentration of mammals, amphibians and reptiles, fish species and other fauna elements that can be found in Annex II of Council Directive 92/43/EEC. Due to the existence of fossil groves covered with coniferous forest, the area is used by carnivorous species such as Ursus arctos, Lynx and Canis lupus as a hibernation and breeding area, while the site is also considered an important ecological corridor, stepping stone type. In addition, the magnificence of the protected natural area is not only due to the existence of a large number of species or individuals, but also to the existence of bottom and sides evorsion marmite/niches/potholes along Zăbala river, especially in the area called Căldări, which offers the site both scientific and aesthetic value.
General objective of the project:
Protecting and conserving biodiversity in the protected natural area ROSCI0018 Căldările Zăbalei together with the protected natural area 2810 Căldările Zăbalei – Zârna Mică – Răoaza, by elaborating and implementing an efficient management plan of the site (methods of efficient management of the anthropic impact on natural habitats and existing species in the site).
The protected natural area ROSCI0018 Căldările Zăbalei is a Natura 2000 site stated by Order no. 1964 of December 2007 regarding the establishment of the protected natural area regime for community importance sites, as an integral part of the Natura 2000 European ecological network in Romania. The protected natural area 2810 Căldările Zăbalei – Zârna Mică – Răoaza is a nature reserve stated by Decision of Vrancea County Council no. 12 of 1992 and Law no. 5 of 2000.
The project promotes actions directly contributing to achieving the 4.1. Specific Objective of Priority Axis 4 of the Operational Programme for Large Infrastructure (POIM) 2014-2020, by including some objectives stated in the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy, the Natura 2000 Priority Action Framework, the National Strategy and the 2014-2020 Biodiversity Conservation Action Plan, all taking into account the concrete needs of biodiversity protection in Romania.
The project is financed from the European Development Fund through the Operational Programme for Large Infrastructure, Priority Axis 4 – Environmental protection by biodiversity conservation measures, air quality monitoring and decontamination of historically polluted sites, within the 4.1 Specific Objective – Increasing the biodiversity protection and conservation through appropriate management measures and restoration of degraded ecosystems.

– Elaborating an efficient management plan for biodiversity protection, monitoring and conservation improvement in the protected natural area ROSCI0018 Căldările Zăbalei together with the protected natural area 2810 Căldările Zăbalei – Zârna Mică – Răoaza.
– Improving the management capacity of the protected natural area ROSCI0018 Căldările Zăbalei together with the protected natural area 2810 Căldările Zăbalei – Zârna Mică – Răoaza.
– Increasing education and awareness concerning the importance of ROSCI0018 Căldările Zăbalei together with the protected natural area 2810 Căldările Zăbalei – Zârna Mică – Răoaza and the biodiversity conservation measures among the local community and other relevant target groups within the site.
The target group of the project consists of local communities nearby the protected natural area, students and teachers, representatives of local public administration, representatives of economic operators active nearby and on the site, landowners, communities (obști), associations, NGOs etc.
The implementation of the project will contribute both to maintaining the conservation status of natural habitats and species of flora and fauna of community interest, as well as to the awareness and information process of local communities on the rights and benefits of maintaining and preserving the current biodiversity of the protected area.
The project will take place within the protected natural area ROSCI0018 Căldările Zăbalei together with the protected natural area 2810 Căldările Zăbalei – Zârna Mică – Răoaza, located in the southern part of Vrancea Mountains. The site occupies an area of 388 ha and has been in custody of Ocolul Silvic Năruja since 2010.
